We are having problems with the original logo that you girls chose. What do you think of this one. It has the jester hat, that matches your collars and then we will sew breast cancer ribbons on the right sleeve.

logo

The girls found a pen after the last post and all contributed to a logo. When we get it into the computer we will post a picture. It is a rugby ball with a 3 point jester hat on and a breast cancer ribbon in the middle. Pius XI Girls Rugby goes around the bottom of the ball. I will also be talking with Dr. Skrade re: the possiblity of some type of assembly when the national guard presents us with the jerseys. Also, possibly some media to cover the event.

This is what the girls decided on at the meeting today, with a logo for the new Jesters to be made later. When I have a pen.

The HTML cuts it off, but the socks are the color of the collar.

GOOD NEWS!

We entered the club for a grant by the National Guard and USA Rugby. WE GOT IT! Below is what the grant covers:

-25 Jerseys, shorts and socks. You will be able to customize the style and colors of your jersey to help retain club identity
-1 set of Post Pads
-1 set of Field Flags
-1 Gear Bag
-8 Gilbert A-XV Practice Balls
-2 Gilbert Revolution X Match Balls
-25 Mouthguards
-USA Rugby Law Book

We also get a designed website!!!!
Plus they will be using some of our photos that we take for promotional purposes.

There are 20 different styles of jersey to choose from and 12 different colors - sadly no hot pink. We must place our order by Christmas for the jerseys. Since we agreed that you girls could choose the jerseys/colors we would like anyone that is interested in helping choose to meet at Cariboo coffee (hwy 100 and Bluemound next to Qdoba)this coming Tuesday at 10am. If you are not able to attend and would like to place a vote on colors/style the website to design the jersey is
http://guardkit2009.worldsportshops.com

Place comments or votes here if you are not able to make the brief meeting. We also need the team logo that you girls chose.

Finally, a big thanks to Abby who helped (was forced) to write the essays that helped us to win. We will be looking very sharp for our first home game in April!

For those girls that have earned money from fundraising I will be calculating it and letting you know how much you have earned. If you are sure you are going but for whatever reason can not get me the money by Friday PLEASE call and talk to me so we can work something out. Currently Abby, Sarah H and Lindsey are definitely going.

Happy Holidays

Thanks to everyone that stopped at the meeting on Monday. I know several of you had previous committments and were not able to attend. If you could please see Abby, she has two papers for you to sign. One is going to be a xmas card that is given to all the Pius staff from our team and the second is going to go along with a letter to the girls that signed up at club day to play in the spring. Please just write something that you like about rugby. We are still working on getting a home field and with some luck may have one by our first game Sunday April 5 at 1pm (we host). To cover field costs, lining costs and sir costs we will be having a candy sale early next year.
We hope that you and your families all have a good Thanksgiving.

fullerton tournament

The fullerton tournament is March 19-23, with the tournament on the 21 & 22. The coach for Oak Creek is setting up all the arrangements since his team has been there 3 times. My understanding is that Oak Creek, Pius and North Shore are combining to represent WI. Please let me know if you are planning on going. I will need $100 by December 15 to hold airline tickets. The only way that this money is refundable is if the trip is cancelled. Any questions please call 258-6927.

fund raising

The money for the cookie dough is not due until we deliver the dough, however if people want to pay now that's fine just keep track of who paid. Sheets need to be to me by next Monday night (sorry I wanted to give you guys Thanksgiving weekend with relatives to sell but we couldn't get the dough in time for xmas). According to Mr. Z's dough will be in around December 10ish. I believe we get $4-5 per tub sold - I will call again to find out the exact number, I have talked with so many company's they all run together. This was the only one that had a large amount of choices and could get us the dough by xmas. I talked with Mayfair - no go on gift wrap they have one specific group this year. I do have candy to sell after cookie dough if people are interested 55% profit. For those not going on the California trip please help with the fund raising we are using this money for other things also: field rental, sir fees, posts, pads, jerseys, other tournaments and other rugby related expenses.

Cookie Dough Fundraising

We will be getting order forms for Oatis Spunkmire cookie dough tomorrow. Abby will bring them to school on Thursday, if you would like one (to fund raise), see Abby and ask her for one either in her TAC (604), or leave a message on the blog that you want one after school on Thurs. There's 16 different kinds of cookies, we're selling till the Monday after Thanksgiving, cookie dough will be here the second week of December. ITS REALLY important that we earn money for the team, the Watters' are broke! So push the fact that Christmas is coming and its an easy way to make Christmas treats.

Thanks

yearbook

I talked to the director of the yearbook about getting some photos of the rugby team in it. He thought that it was a great idea. I will send the team photo but he would also like 6-7 more pictures (action shots are best). If your family took pictures that we did not get a copy of and there is a good action shot please email or send a copy with Abby, otherwise we will pick some photos and send them before the December deadline.

Also, a special thanks to Sara K. for pushing the rugby article in the Scope. Many incoming families got copies of the paper and came over to talk about the program. All together we had many incoming freshman that are interested in coming out next year. If some of them come out, some of the girls that signed up at club day along with our "core" players - that's you guys - we will have a good size team!

Sad new re:fund raising from Gilles. I talked with the manage and they currently don't do what Culvers does by giving a charity 10% of the profits for a 2 hour period. I left him with some facts on how it would increase his profits if it was done on a star day and we had the teachers phone in orders which were picked up/delivered by the rugby team and he said he was willing to think about it but I'm not holding my breath.

fund raising

Happy election day!
If you girls are like Abby you may be having some rugby withdrawal. While I know the spring season does not start for a while we have been looking into different ways to make money so we can compete in tournaments. A few girls will be going to California in March along with Oak Creek and Northshore to make up one of the 14 girls international teams at Fullerton. We are looking into tournaments for late spring and possibly some travel scrimmages this summer or 7's tournaments. In order to cut down on costs AND to get the money to cover the cost of the uniforms that you would eventually like (hot pink) we need to fund raise starting now.

* Shirts will be hitting the bookstore soon (possible x-mas presents for loved ones???) - we have to work out an account with them because we are the only "club" to sell in the bookstore and then Pius controls your money.

* Anyone interested in selling candy let me know. Also if you have a Sam's card so we can buy in bulk let me know. I have purchased some large candy bars, Reese's pb cups and large boxes of m&m's at a very good rate - we should be able to double our money on each.

* Holiday bake sale at Pius???? I am not sure if we need permission or who to get permission from so if anyone would like to line up a date for a bake sale sometime early Decemberish in the union that would be great.

* I have contacted a cookie company that sells 13 different types of pre-made cookie dough and they are sending out packets for those who wish to sell. They are promising that the dough will be here in time for Xmas which will make it easier to sell - at least from this full time working mom's view.

* I am still looking into Mayfair malls gift wrapping for charity but no guaranty yet.

* A Culvers night is also a possibility however I am not sure how we could get the word out to enough people to make this worthwhile. We would get 10% of the profits for the orders that came in with the Pius slips -- and no we can't hand them out at Culvers.

* Anyone with pull at Gilles let me know. I was thinking about asking them to do the 10% thing on a 'star' day. That way kids could walk from Pius to get food AND the teachers could phone in their orders, give you girls the money and you run back/forth so they can eat during their meetings and we would get money.

* Mr. Z's has contacted us about possibly selling pizzas in late winter. I work at a poor inner city school and the school just raised $9,000 from selling these. Just a thought.

Please let us know if you have any ideas, can arrange any fundraising events, find a rich donor looking for somewhere to spend money etc.

Two last things:
- We still need 2 jerseys from the last game & Dann's game shorts
- Christmas is just around the corner. I was thinking that the team could get together and sign a xmas paper that will be made into a team xmas card (with your team photo) and given to all the teachers at Pius -- a little suck up goes a long way.

Any questions or comments let us know.

Fundraising

We have found out that if we work concessions for basketball games we get to keep 60% of what we earn. We were wondering how many people would be willing to work there (this would put credit towards the trip,) Also we are looking into a Culvers night, and we are going to see if we could do something at Giles. Any more ideas or questions contact us.

Open House

We got a table for open house, so we need girls to come and help set up on Sat. at 3 on Saturday, and then we need people to work the table from 8:30-230ish on Sunday and Mon from 5-8. Coming and helping at the booth will help serve as credit towards you for the California trip in March.

final game

We just wanted to let everyone know that we are still trying to find another team to play with us against Catholic Memorial. Currently Fond du lac is considering it. I know they are considering sometime between 16-19. I am sorry that there are no pictures from last weeks game but the person who had my camera didn't take any. If you have some good photos get them to us and we will put them up.

Way to go Pius Pirates. This win took your hard work, determination, team work and grit - along with lots of ice, tylenol and one trip to the ER. Your awesome teamwork skills led to 2 tries by Lindsey and 2 by Sarah K. (one with a 65 yard run) and one conversion by Ellie. This win would not have been possible if you all had not played your hardest! You showed your ability to think on your feet, play different positions as needed and that heat stroke could not even stop you. This win is even more incredible when you look at the fact that our team played down Iplayers on the field for part of the second 1/2 (down 2 players to be exact). I would also like to thank all the injured for having the courtesy to be injured on our side of the field so I did not have to run so far. Congratulations on your well earned win. The boys may have lost homecoming to CMH but the GIRLS RUGBY TEAM won it back.

We are in need of ideas to raise funds for the club. Other clubs have suggested selling candy (which we cant do till after mag/cal), and selling hot dogs at Walmart on weekends. Any girls who know that they can not be there or can not play must let us know before Saturday. If you need a ride or carpool arrangements please email or call me. Unfortunately Abby and Brit are not able to play, so we will most likely be unopposed scrums.

Sunday's game

If anyone needs a ride to the pitch please let us know by email or phone
(258-6927). Dann would like everyone to be there around 2ish to watch some of the a-side game and to run some plays. Our game is around 3:30. If parents do not want to wait we are willing to drive girls out early. If parents drop you off they can re-enter the park with their receipt. Since this game was rescheduled (and the male coaches planned it) I am not clear on exactly who is hosting. According to Dann it is one of the a-side teams for all the games however if you would like to bring a dessert or something feel free. I think they will be having subs. Sorry for the short notice but it is all I got.

Minooka park has a $5 per car entrance fee, so carpooling might be wise. If people are coming to watch please make sure they know about the fee.

Schedule change

Our first official game is this coming Sunday at Minooka Park in Waukesha. Instead of playing Brookfield we will be playing Muskego due to lack of Brookfield players. As I understand it, Sept. 20 is homecoming at Pius. Would you like this weekend off OR would you like me to try to find another game for Sunday???? t-shirt fund raiser

We have had some requests to purchase a Pius XI girls rugby shirt. Originally Dann and I bought the team the shirts in an effort to unite the team. At practice last week the vote was unanimous that we keep the bright pink color for players only. I have ordered some shirts made in the following colors: light pink, florescent green and bright yellow. If you know anyone that would like to purchase a shirt please let me know ASAP so I can increase my order. I only ordered 2 dozen because I have to prepay for the shirts. The shirts are in men sizes - like your shirts and the company has promised that they will be here in time for our first game! So if anyones parents, siblings, friends, TAC teachers etc really want one let me know the color and size ASAP.

Just a reminder that if you get the permission forms to post pictures from practices, and eventually games, on the blog signed, we can start adding the photos from the past few practices. And so far, we can post one girl, so bring the forms as soon as you can (if you wish to).

Pizza & rugby

Since most of the girls and parents have not seen a real rugby game we will be watching a professional rugby game with commentary from coach Dann. We are hoping that the girls will be able to see how the drills and plays that we are working on will be used during play. The 'Sin Bin', which is owned by the Westside Harlequins (the rugby team that Dann has been affiliated with for almost 30 yrs) has agreed to allow us to use their facilities on Thursday Aug. 14 from 5:30-6:30pm to view a previously recorded rugby game so that we can stop it to discuss pertinent points. The 'Sin Bin's' (a rugby term for penalty box) manager has stated that the time we would be coming in is right at opening and that there are typically no patrons until 7:30ish. We are inviting parents and players (with parent permission) to watch about 50 minutes of rugby and have pizza/soda. While we understand that taking minors into a pub isn't an ideal situation, we feel that the early hours, our long term affiliation with the rugby club and with our supervision there will be no problems. We HIGHLY encourage any parents that are interested in learning more about the game of rugby to attend. We will drive the girls that have parental permission over to the Sin Bin (39th and National) at 5:20 on Thursday. You can pick the girls up around 6:30pm or if you need we can drive them home as we will be finishing an hourish later than usual. Please RSVP so that we know how many pizzas to order.
Thanks,
Dann and Dorothy Watters

Good news, Bad news

Bad news: We have been unable to locate available jerseys for us to borrow for this year.

Good news: We have found/purchased a decent jersey that we can use temporarily - this year or until our "permanent" jerseys can be funded.

Bad news: Underarmer is for sports with little to no contact and according to the sales reps they would not be appropriate for rugby.
Also, the reps felt that Adidas soccer shirts felt that they would be too thin and their rugby shirts would never be ready.

Good news: One company has soccer shirts that will hopefully work and can be here by our first game with numbers on them.

Bad news: We could not find pink or any florescent color (soccer only uses plain colors).

Good news: We ordered the soccer shirts that can be here in time. While not hot pink, they do look sharp - red/black stripes and we thought one red/one black sock with black shorts.
THESE ARE NOT THE TEAMS OFFICIAL JERSEYS - THE TEAM WILL STILL BE PICKING THE STYLE AND COLORS OF YOUR KIT. THE SHIRTS THAT HAVE BEEN PURCHASED WILL BE USED TEMPORARILY UNTIL WE HAVE THE FUNDING NECESSARY FOR THE PURCHASE OF THE SHIRTS THE TEAM DESIGNS!!!

Team Colors + Name

We are still in need of team colors, so please comment on what you would like. We were able to find hot pink socks so if this is what you would like then please leave a comment or email me. Remeber that when we order jerseys they need to match the socks.

Also we are in need of ideas for a team name, so again please leave a comment either here or at my mail. Otherwise we are the Lady Popes, do you really want that to happen?
