Tuesday meeting

Everyone please meet me at the field house after school on Tuesday. It will be brief and you will have time to get to your other meetings and practices. I just want to go over a change in practice times on Wednesdays, and where they will be. We will be heading down to practice with Oak Creek at 5 pm on Weds. for the rest of the fall season. This will give a practice that has enough people attending so the workout can be productive and new things can be done. The time will be from 5 to 6:30 in Oak Creek and I will have copies of the driving instructions with me. Ideally , we will have car pools set up to limit the # of cars we need to bring.

Sunday new time

Well it's a good thing I read some of Dann's email. Apparently game is at 1:30. Be there at 12:30. We need everyone to be there they have a much larger team than ours but our team has the guts. Don't forget to bring a dessert and a gallon of water. If you are in the really giving mood feel free to bring some small containers of Gatorade for the after match party. Any questions call 258-6927. Just so I know who reads this please sign your name - Ricky I know you do!

Sunday's Game

Sunday's game is at 1pm be there at noon. Remember there is a cost to get into the park per car. As an added surprise I just learned that we are hosting this game. Everyone needs to bring:
some type of dessert and 1 gallon of water.

If you are not able to make it please call, the number of girls that turn out for this game may decide if we can continue this fall. Other teams have refused our suggestion to play 10 or 12 girls at a time so that we could have subs.

Also in order to play I need your registration sheet signed by your parent and a copy of your insurance card. Please also remember to turn in your picture release form so photos can go on the web and the club dues - $100.

Last week

This is it girls. We need to have at least 20 registration forms and insurance cards by the end of practice Thursday in order to keep the team going. If you were on the team last year and your insurance has not changed just write that on the registration form.

If we get the number we need to continue games will start in September - not this weekend. We have been asked to play a homecoming game against Catholic Memorial again this year (we won last year!)

There is one other concern that has risen this year. Since most of the team consists of players that now work and play other sports, the time for rugby practice has decreased. We know everyone is busy however this is a sport that having only a few girls at practice does not work. If the team continues there will have to be at least one practice day where we have at least 15 ruggers to practice formations, plays etc. So, all that being said I sincerely hope that our team can continue this fall and kick some butt. We have the makings for a good team, it would be great if the Jesters could continue this fall. Any questions call 258-6927.

PRACTICE HAS STARTED

Lets start turning out so we can see what your team looks like. Britt has brought out some new faces from Milwaukee school of the arts for us. Please call me or send messages along with someone if you cannot make it. It's your team ladies, it will go as far as you push it.

Pass it on

I just read that Esa's sister is coming to Pius this year - smart choice! Pass on the website and information about the rugby team practices. She played with us before maybe she will do it again. Make sure that everyone who played or has shown interest has the information about next weeks practices.

Practice start up

Tuesday 4 pm Juneau[at least for the first few weeks]
Wednesday 4 @ Juneau
Thursday 4 @ Juneau
I will have forms for the season availble at my house sometime Wednesday afternoon
Aug 5 or you can get them Tuesday. I need all new forms for this season.
Sorry this is late, I have been recooping after having my shoulder fixed. That said, I wont be demanstrating much this fall, I hope the returning players remember what you learned well enough to pass on your knowledge. As alaways call me if you have questions - 414 258-6927.
Just a reminder we must have a very minimum of 20 consistent players that attend practice and are able to make the games. It is not safe to be playing down players or moving people constantly around the field. If the team gets up and running we will talk about fund raising ideas and tournaments. If we can't get the numbers we will find another team for those committed to playing.
This is your team so recruit players. The only requirements in recruiting is that they must be a female attending some high school, able to make practice/games, want to learn rugby and are willing to give 100%.

fund raising

We need to start fund raising now so that we will have enough money to travel in the spring - if we have the players. Even if we have to combine with another team to play I would like there to be little to no cost -- except touristy stuff. We will be doing the cookie dough sale in November because some girls have their trip almost paid for from last years fund raiser. Any summer ideas???

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

Sevens Tournament/fall rugby

We will not be playing in this Saturday's Harlequin 7's tournament at the lakefront due to lack of numbers. Only 2 people have been to 7's practice. There is a 7's tournament in July however we would have to have 11 committed girls at practice to consider paying out our own money for the entrance fee.

Fall Pius XI Girls Rugby
Fall practice will be starting by the beginning of August. In order for there to be a Pius XI Girls Jester team we must have a MINIMUM of 20 committed girls that make practice and go to games. If we can not get at least this number we will attempt to combine with another team - no guarantees. We can not continue to have only 9 girls at practice and 10 girls at games with fill-ins from the other team. It is also not safe to have no subs to fill in when needed. There were several games where our girls played the entire game (bravo by the way) only to be up against a team that could rotate in fresh players every 15 min. This is why many injuries occur. Our team has the ability to be very good if we have the numbers, determination and practice. While we are called the 'Pius XI Girls Rugby' at this time we do not have the numbers from Pius to keep players exclusively from Pius. It does not matter to me what school the girls that play for our team come from (Wauwatosa, Milw. Lutheran, HS of the Arts, MPS) as long as they make practice/games and have the heart to be a rugger they will be considered. Should we have a large number of Pius girls that wish to play they will still take priority. So bottom line
IF YOU WANT THIS TEAM TO CONTINUE WE NEED MORE COMMITTED GIRLS! If you find someone interested give them our phone number or the web site info so they can leave us a message.

LETS GET THIS TEAM GOING - I HAVE BIG PLANS FOR THE SPRING

If you will be playing in the fall please leave a message.

Practice change

This Thurs. practice has been cancelled and rescheduled for Friday. Many players are unable to make practice until after exams - per parent request. So to get ready for our LAST game this season, practice will be Fri. 4pm at Juneau. If you are unable to make practice please call. If you are unable to make the Sunday game DEFINATELY call so we know how many players we have. Game time is 1pm in Oak Creek by the high school. Dann will post directions after talking with the other coach.

Also, during open house in the fall several incoming freshman expressed interest in rugby. They have been invited to attend a practice NEXT Monday from 4-5pm. Afterward we will be having a pizza party for one last hurrah to our season. We would really like as many people as possible to come and talk with possible new players. If you know someone who may be interested in rugby in the fall - I don't care where they go as long as they can get to practices and the games - they are also welcome on Monday.

banquet

The rugby banquet and awards night was a lot of fun. The slide shows were great to watch - boy how our little ruggers have grown! While it was fun to see the past year, at the same time it was sad to be saying good-bye to our beloved seniors. Our co-captains (Ellie and Sara K)have worked really hard not only at gaining rugby skills but also in helping to keep our team as a unit.

Pius princess 4/23

This weeks was a white knuckler. Down to 2 repeat princesses (sorry Emma - even though you really wanted the throne you didn't make the finals & nice try getting into the photo). Anyway I digress. All hail our repeat princess, Princess Allie.

Ahhh, another week another decrowning. However as you can see I wasn't present for this slaughter (I would have had a camera with me!) which is why you see this awesome picture that I created. April 20th Match

The team we are playing is planning on bringing 30ish players. It is rugby tradition that we feed them, especially since they drove in for the match. We are asking that each girl donate $5 towards the main food and bring some type of dessert. If you are also able to bring snacks or chips please let Dann know. Sorry I will be missing this match - give them heck but also be safe and have fun!!

Mrs. Watters

Hosting a Match

To my knowledge this is our last hosting until fall. I will not be able to be there because I am out of town. The Heppe's were our volunteer 'head of hosting family' however Sarah's last spring game was last week. Should anyone feel like taking over this position for our April 20th game that would be fantastic. It mainly entails setting the food and drinks up towards the end of the second half. We already have plates, napkins and drinks. Dann will be arranging for the main part of the meal. Please leave a message for Dann or call him 258-6927 to let him know.

Thanks

Ahhhh - a new princess once again. I think the best phrase to sum up our newly crowned princess is "always a lady in waiting, never a princess". However this week her dream came true, she is finally the princess she always wanted to be!

Banquet Update

After talking with some players it looks like Wed. evening is the best for the banquet. I will be booking the room by easter - looking at midish May. If you have a date that is really not good let me know. Please talk to players that are not playing this semester or have other sports: Addy, Kelly, Essa etc. The banquet is for anyone who played this school year and their parents (or guest etc as long as they pay I don't care how many you invite!)

rugby banquet

We would like to have a small rugby banquet in mid-late May. Please bring your calendar of dates that don't work due to other games, grad parties etc. It will be on a Mon-Thur evening (so I don't have to pay $125 for the room). As it stands right now I am thinking of Stonefire pizza. They have a nice back room with the ability to hook up a laptop for pictures. Afterward you can "go play" while the adults talk. Got a better idea throw up for consideration.

Mrs. Watters

Pius vs Brookfield

Hell of a job ladies! Despite the 22 degree weather with gusting winds, the inability to feel your hands (or any part of your body), our lack of subs and numerous asthma attacks the team showed that winning isn't everything, its the persistance and heart of a team that makes real ruggers. Congrats to Ellie Lynch for making a try and the conversion kick and a "maybe next time" to Abby who scored a try that didn't count due to a whistled foul just as she scored. We may not have won but you looked awesome in your new jerseys. A sad good-bye to Sarah Heppe who leaves us for the rest of the spring season for softball. And a welcome to our rookies who all got a 'taste' of the pitch - we told you after you've been tackled once the game gets better. As always the other team was impressed with your gusto and the hard hits you made. We would also like to send a thank you to the Brookfield team for supplying us with great subs due to a few injuries and breathing issues.

Mrs Watters

princess of the week

Ally wins her first crowning as she dethrones Abby as our newest princess! Along with her crown and 'bling' she won a stackable candy santa - yeah that's right I said santa - we are on a tight budget!

NEW DIRECTIONS

Hwy Y is closed in Waukesha. You can use the detour route off of the exit before - Hwy O and follow detour signs. But the easiest way is to take 94 W and exit at Barker Rd. Go west until South 164 and turn left. Stay on that road until you get to Sunset Rd (Superamerica is on your left). Turn left. Park is short ways down the road. You could also turn off of S 164 at Y and then turn right on Sunset with the park directly in front of you.

Don't forget to bring desserts!

Sunday's Match

Directions to Minooka park:

SOUTH ON I-43 TO RACINE AVE [hgwy Y ]
RIGHT ON RACINE AVE ABOUT 3 MILES
LEFT AT SUNSET LEFT INTO PARK

Entrance fee is $3 per car. Pitch is at area #3. Please watch the blog to see if game is cancelled due to weather. It may be cancelled early because some girls are coming in from Illinois to play. We don't want people driving on ice roads just to get to the park and not be able to play. If in doubt call us 258-6927.

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Sunday's Game

Sundays game is at Manooka park rugby pitch (area 3)in Waukesha. The time has changed to 1:30 due to a request from the other team. Players are to be there at 12:30. Remember there is a fee for this park - $3 a car. If the field is bad, the park will call the game, otherwise the game goes on. Please check the website that morning to see if anything has been posted. For the new girls, you can not play with out us having a copy of your insurance card and your paperwork in. Any questions talk to Dann - although he may not have the answer so post it here or call me 258-6927.

Unfortunately it's blurry but this is an action shot just prior to Emma scoring a try and then smashing her face into the wall. No worries, she is a true rugger and I am sure the marks will fade before prom!

Abby's mix matched socks and Deidre's enthusiasm help their team to eventually score a try.

Our first 'Pius Pwetty Hands' of the spring goes to Abby who won the crown by faking a pass. We'll see if she can hold onto the crown next week when we have a full practice!

Saturday, March 28, 2009

April 5 game

Our first game is this coming Sunday April 5 at 1pm. Unfortunately Doyne park which we were going to use was dug up by the county -only the pitch part. I would have let you play in the mud but they didn't leave it flat. Most likely the game will be at Minooka park in Waukesha. The Heppe's have gratiously agreed to plan the after game party - hopefully it will be warmer next weekend. As is rugby tradition everyone is expected to pitch in when we host. If your not going to be able to make the game you can send drinks, chips etc. Please talk with Sarah Heppe to let her know what you will be sending. As many of you know rugby is played in all weather so pray real hard this week for a sunny 60 degree day!

OOPS

Major problem! I wrote down the wrong date for concessions -- stupid chemo brain. We have it Feb.20th not this week. I am soooo sorry for the mistake, however the good news is you can now go to the 'peace concert' at Pius this Friday. Now I have been informed that Feb 20 is a no school day for Pius. I will contact Pius to make sure that even with no school games go on. So if there really is a game that night we will need people to help out. Unfortunately Dann and I will not be in town that night but the Heppes have GRACIOUSLY agreed to take over. Please watch the blog for updates on this situation. If we do have concessions on the 20th I need to have commitments to fill the slots before I leave town on Feb 14.

Thanks
Mrs. Watters

Ideas

We would like to have a rugby banquet in May before the seniors graduate. Any ideas of where you would like to have one please post so everyone can put their two cents in.
Spring Schedule

Sunday April 5 Pius vs Brookfield (we home it) field not know yet
Monday April 20 Pius vs Kettle Moraine (we home it) field not known yet
(Tenative) Saturday April 25 Pius vs Muskego at Muskego
Friday May 1 High Interest Day at St. Dominics 11:00 - lunch included for those going to help out.
(Tenative) Saturday May 9 Pius vs Cathlic Memorial B TBA field
Sunday May 17 Pius vs Fond du Lac field TBA
Sunday May 31 Pius vs Oak Creek at Oak Creek

We are still working on getting our own home field. A few other teams also have had field problems so until spring we won't know exactly where everyone will play.

We are looking for a game on May 2 or 3 still.

We are still looking into a spring/early summer tournament. For anyone interested in 7's, which is played different than what you have learned, let us know. If we have enough people that are dedicated we will have extra practices just for 7's and play in the Harlequin Lakefront 7's in June.

concession stand

Yes the season is about to begin again. To raise money we will again be selling concessions, this time on a Friday. So, we have concession THIS Friday Feb. 6
3:30-9:30. We need 4 people there at a time. Shifts go in 2 hour increments, unless you wish to go longer. The last group does clean up however if you talk to Lindsey and Sarah H there are perks to being the last group. Please sign up on the blog or call us 258-6927.

Sorry

We have talked with the coach from Oak Creek that was heading the Fullerton trip. His team has decided to go to a tournament in Ohio instead for this year. We are really bummed out. The money that was collected as a down payment will be returned to those that gave it to me. Starting in May I will be working on setting our team up for Fullerton in 2010 - that way we won't have this problem again and possibly we can add a second day at lagoona beach or trip to disney land (shhh). There are a few closer tournaments this spring that you all can discuss with Dann. They would be cheaper because we could rent a bus for travel. Again I am really sorry to those of you that worked SO hard to make money for this trip. To Lindsey, Abby, Brit and Sarah H, the money you made from cookie dough will stay in the club account for you to use towards another trip. If you girls would like I will order candy for sales in Feb. Also we have a Friday concessions in Feb. -- please don't leave me by myself! Try to get some of the new girls to help out to get to the team.

HOLD THE PHONE

I have been in contact with the Fullerton tournament to explain our problem. They have agreed to find California ruggers to fill in with us. I am waiting for the lead coach from Oak Creek to agree to this or refuse it. If he agrees -- we go to California!!! Keep your fingers crossed.

fullerton

Hey guys
We just got word from the coach organizing the fullerton tournament. There are not enough girls signed up to make a team, most likely due to the economy. Our team has 4 definates, oak creek has 4 definates but the other team has none. If there are people that were still considering going I need to know NOW. If the team can not be filled out within a couple of days it will be cancelled. We are very upset about this because you girls worked so hard to go. There were a couple of other options for April and May, tournaments in St. Louis and Ohio but this trip was important to you. Hopefully we will have a full team this spring and fall and with the fundraising we do we will not have to rely on other teams to make up a full team for fullerton next year - it will strickly be Pius. If by some miracle we get 10 girls that can go within a few days (I am even willing to take girls from other teams - DSHA, Muskego, Catholic Memorial etc) I will attempt to convince the other coach to continue the trip. If not, those that have paid money will get their money back. I think that Abby summed it up best "this sucks!".

I also need to know if you girls want to continue with fund raising to ensure that we will have enough money to have home games and pay fully for our girls to go next year to fullerton. Again I am really sorry.
